Welcome to CASE – Center for Social and Economic Research, an independent, non-profit research institute established upon the belief that evidence-based public policies are essential for the prosperity of societies.

30 Years of Excellence

Founded in 1991 in Warsaw, CASE is a leading proponent of evidence-based policymaking and is recognized as a preeminent think tank in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as globally. With over three decades of experience, our organization has a proven record of providing comprehensive research, analysis, training, and solutions to address complex economic, social, and political challenges.

Our specialization and network of experts

Our expert areas of focus include sustainable development, labour, migration, social policies, fiscal policies and growth, as well as trade and macroeconomics. We operate with a dedicated in-house team, a network of distinguished fellows, and a database of roughly 1,000 experts who contribute to our rigorous and innovative quantitative and qualitative analyses, resulting in practical and evidence-based recommendations.

Area of our activities

Our primary geographical focus is on the European Union, its Member States, the Eastern Partnership, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. However, we are open to expanding our research scope through project collaborations.

is to drive the shift towards more inclusive, sustainable, environmentally-friendly, and technologically-advanced societies.

Our history

CASE was created in August 1991 by a group of 10 economists who were involved in the economic changes taking place in Poland after 1989. In December of the same year, CASE was officially approved by the court and began analyzing and supporting economic reforms in many countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the former USSR. In 1998, CASE started creating a network of similar organizations in other countries that were undergoing similar transitions such as Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, and Belarus. By doing this, we were able to expand our reach and have a bigger impact. We also formed partnerships with other research institutes and consulting companies around the world.

In 2000, we decided to shift our focus to becoming an international think-tank with a mission centered on problems related to European integration, post-communist transition, and the global economy. In the mid-2000s, we broadened our work to include regions such as the Middle East and North Africa.

To maintain our financial stability and intellectual independence, CASE has always made an effort to have diverse funding sources. Throughout our history, we have received funding
from various sources including the European Commission, European Parliament, European Economic and Social Council, European Committee of the Regions, World Bank, UN agencies,
USAID, OSI network, Ford Foundation, public authorities, and private corporations in different countries.

CASE – Ukraine was founded in 1999 by CASE – Center for Social and Economic Research as a part of a successor to the USAID funded CASE policy advising project on “Ukraine Macroeconomic Policy Program” implemented together with the Harvard Institute of International Development between 1996 and 2001.

CASE – Ukraine operates as an independent Ukrainian NGO.
